RAINDANCE x NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY TALENT FUND

Championing new voices with £30,000 budgets and Oscar® potential

As part of the 33rd Raindance Film Festival, six short documentaries created under the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund will celebrate their global premieres on June 26. These compelling works, each just 8–12 minutes long, are the result of a highly competitive initiative designed to foster new voices in UK nonfiction filmmaking.

Now in its third year, the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund provides early-career filmmakers with more than just funding — each selected team received £30,000, year-long professional mentorship, and Netflix-hosted workshops spanning legal, creative, finance, and production. The prompt for this round? “You’re never gonna believe this…” — a brief that led to bold, inventive, and personal storytelling.

Beyond production support, what sets this initiative apart is its focus on underrepresented voices, aligning with Raindance’s own mission to amplify new perspectives in independent cinema. The selected shorts will also be released globally on Netflix’s YouTube channel, opening their reach far beyond the festival circuit.

Notably, these films will also compete in Raindance’s Oscar®-qualifying “Best Documentary Short” category, giving them serious industry exposure.

The Selected Films:

  • BEYOND THE DIVIDE – dir: Imoje Aikhoje
  • THE ANGRY BIRD – dir: Lisa Smith & Jack Lilleywhite
  • THE GOOD FARMER AND THE FAILED SON – dir: Ailill Martin & Peter Kilmartin
  • BAND – dir: David Chabeaux & Owen Tooth
  • THE HERRING QUEEN – dir: Eilidh Munro & Isabella Bassett
  • TOO DISGUSTING TO BE CONFUSED – dir: Maya Avidov & Savannah James-Bayly

For emerging documentary makers, this fund represents more than visibility — it’s tangible production support, career mentoring, and a credible launchpad into the global industry. With the backing of Netflix and Raindance, these six shorts are primed to inspire both audiences and fellow creators.
