A new film company based in Manchester and Birmingham is aiming to reshape how independent films are made and distributed across the UK. Founded in April 2025, Twister Pictures is positioning itself as a new kind of film distribution company—one that not only acquires films, but actively build talent pipelines.
Led by founder and Sales & Acquisitions Director Rajab Mahmood, Twister Pictures was built on a simple insight: while many people aspire to write, direct or produce films, very few understand how to successfully sell or distribute them. “Everyone wants to make films, but no one knows how to get them seen,” said Rajab Mahmood. “We’re building a platform that doesn’t just teach filmmaking, but actually connects creators to real audiences.”
Since launching, the company has introduced a multi-layered approach to developing film talent. This includes the Twister Pictures Academy, offering accessible training for aspiring filmmakers, and Twister Pictures Network, which hosts informal industry events such as ‘Games Night’ to encourage collaboration across all experience levels.
The company will be launching Twister Pictures Showcase, an exhibition platform designed to give short filmmakers the opportunity to screen their work to live audiences and receive direct feedback.
At its core, Twister Pictures remains focused on film distribution. The company has recently acquired its second feature film, Numbskull, which is set for a limited release. Its acquisition model focuses on identifying overlooked or underutilised films and giving them a second life through targeted screenings and audience engagement.
Operating outside of London, Twister Pictures is part of a growing movement to decentralise the UK film industry and create more opportunities for regional talent. “We’re not competing against traditional distributors, we are competing against the lack of access”.
“We want to prove that you don’t have to be in London to build a career in film,” added Rajab Mahmood. “There’s incredible talent in the North and Midlands—we’re here to support it and help it reach audiences.”
The company has already seen early traction, with regular film submissions from independent filmmakers, a growing academy membership, and multiple sold-out screening events.
As Twister Pictures continues to expand, its mission remains clear: to discover, develop and distribute the next generation of UK filmmakers.
